What Does Double Marker Test Mean?

The double marker test is also considered as Dual Marker Test. With the help of this test, pregnant women will get to know if they have any chromosomal malformation in their fetus. Chromosomal causes development of distortion in the baby and badly impact the baby’s health. The dual marker test also helps in determining the conditions like Down’s syndrome or Edward’s syndrome in the baby. This test can be done within the first trimester, i.e. 9th-14th week of pregnancy.

How is the Double Marker Test Done?

The dual marker test is done with an ultra-sound and blood sample. It looks for pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and Free beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin).

If the level of free beta hCG is high, then the risk of Trisomy 18 and Down’s syndrome will be high. If the level of PAPP-A is low, then the risk of Down syndrome will be high.

What If You Get Positive or Negative Test?

If you get a positive test, then there are chances that the child will possess some abnormalities. If you get a negative test report, then there will be low chances of your baby possessing any neurological defects.

The cost of a dual marker test varies from one location to another. Most of the cities don’t have the availability of double marker test, so people have to travel. The cost range may be between Rs.1000 to Rs. 5000, and the average cost can be Rs. 2500.
